Cover Driveway & Pavers: The Santa Clara Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Cover-compatible driveway and paver systems for Santa Clara homeowners, with typical installed pricing from $7,000 for paver driveway work and $3,500 for patio installations. Most Cover parts and matching units are available same-day through our supplier network, and we carry common paver base materials and edge restraints on our trucks for Santa Clara’s clay-heavy soil conditions. Homeowners usually discover the failure when settling appears near the garage apron, or when individual pavers shift out of plane after winter rains - the subgrade has washed out or the edge restraint has cracked, and the surface is no longer transferring load to the base.

Which Cover Models This Applies To

Cover’s driveway and paver line spans three series: the Classic residential paver system (45mm thickness, rated for passenger vehicles), the Pro series (60mm, suitable for light commercial or RV pads), and the Permeable line designed for Santa Clara’s stormwater runoff requirements. The part you need depends on which substrate system was originally installed. Classic series uses a standard concrete sand bedding layer over class II base rock; Pro and Permeable require open-graded base with specific ASTM No. 57 stone, and the Permeable series uses a geotextile separation layer that differs from the Pro specification.

To identify your Cover system, check the edge restraint for a stamped model code, or measure paver thickness at a lifted corner. Classic measures 45mm, Pro and Permeable both measure 60mm but differ in spacer nibs - Permeable has wider joint gaps. OEM Cover edge restraints are color-coded: gray for Classic, charcoal for Pro, green for Permeable. We also source aftermarket equivalents from Belgard and Techo-Bloc where Cover OEM lead times stretch past a week, and we note the substitution in your written scope. The aftermarket units meet the same flexural strength specs but may differ in UV stabilizer formulation, which matters in Santa Clara’s sun exposure.

Signs Your Cover Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your Cover Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Individual pavers rock underfoot. The bedding sand has eroded or the base layer has settled, breaking the interlock that distributes load across adjacent units. In Santa Clara’s Adobe soil zones, we’ve seen this after two to three wet seasons when drainage was underspecified.
  • Visible settlement at the garage apron or walkway intersection. The concrete collar or edge restraint has cracked, allowing the paver field to migrate. This often follows vehicle overrun at the apron edge.
  • Weeds growing through joint sand despite recent refilling. The polymeric sand has degraded or was never properly activated with water during original installation. Cover systems rely on joint integrity for load transfer; once sand washes out, point loading accelerates failure.
  • Standing water more than 30 minutes after rain. The base has compacted unevenly or the slope was lost during settlement. Santa Clara’s clay soils slow percolation, so proper base drainage is critical - water that sits breeds efflorescence on Cover’s surface.
  • Chipping or spalling at paver edges. This indicates over-compaction during installation or use of plate compactors without protective mats. Cover’s beveled edge is designed to handle joint loading, not direct hammering.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Santa Clara Price Range What’s Included
Paver driveway installation (Cover or equivalent) $7,000 - $18,000 Excavation, class II base, bedding sand, pavers, edge restraint, compaction, joint sand
Concrete driveway installation $4,500 - $12,000 Forming, rebar or mesh, pour, finish, control joints
Driveway replacement (remove and reinstall) $5,000 - $14,000 Removal, disposal, substrate evaluation, new base if needed, reinstall
Driveway sealing $250 - $700 Cleaning, crack fill, acrylic or penetrating sealer application
Paver patio installation $3,500 - $11,000 Excavation, base, bedding, pavers, edge restraint, joint sand

The range depends on three factors: square footage, substrate condition, and access. A 400-square-foot driveway on stable soil with good side access sits at the lower end; the same footprint with a failed subgrade requiring 12 inches of removal and replacement, plus tight gate access for mini-excavator work, pushes toward the upper end. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, your written price includes all labor, materials, disposal, and the documented photo record. No work proceeds on a change until the change order is signed. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation.

What you can safely check: lift one paver at the failure edge and measure how much bedding sand remains. If it’s within 3/4 inch of specified depth and the base rock is still angular (not rounded from washing), you may need only joint sand replacement and re-compaction. Check the slope with a 4-foot level - water needs to run away from structures.

Where DIY goes wrong: excavating past the bedding layer without understanding the base gradation risks creating a soft spot that telegraphs through in months. Compacting over PVC irrigation lines or shallow conduit - common in Santa Clara’s older Rivermark and Old Quad neighborhoods - cracks what’s buried. And matching Cover’s original color lot is nearly impossible without the production batch code; a patch that looks close in the store reads as two different surfaces in afternoon sun. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Cover, and we maintain supplier relationships that let us source matching lots when they’re still available.
