I started this operation in 2007 after watching too many homeowners get halfway through a remodel and discover the price had drifted into fantasy territory. Before that, I spent eight years in commercial framing and finish carpentry, which is where I learned that the difference between a job that finishes on budget and one that doesn’t is administrative discipline, not luck. I still review every written quote before it goes out, and I still drive to active sites when a customer calls with a concern. My cell number goes on the estimate because I answer it. The Haven Standard exists because I got tired of explaining why other contractors couldn’t do the same.
Mike T., Lead Technician – Kitchen & Bathroom Remodeling
Mike’s been with us since 2014, which in this trade means he’s seen the full evolution of cabinet construction, from particleboard boxes with stapled backs to the full-plywood, soft-close hardware we specify now. He’s certified in wet-area waterproofing through the Tile Council of North America, and he’s the one we send when a Santa Clara customer has a second-story bathroom with original 1960s plumbing that needs to be rethought without tearing out the downstairs ceiling. Off the job, Mike rebuilds vintage motorcycles in a garage in Sunnyvale, which explains his tolerance for finicky mechanical puzzles and his hatred of shortcuts.
Dana L., Senior Installer – Roofing, Windows & Doors
Dana came to us from a commercial roofing crew in San Jose, bringing a familiarity with TPO and modified bitumen that translates directly to the low-slope sections we encounter on Santa Clara’s mid-century ranch additions and ADUs. She’s GAF Master Elite certified and the person who taught the rest of us to spot the difference between a roof that needs repair and a roof that needs honest replacement, which saves customers from spending money they don’t have to. Dana keeps a running spreadsheet of every shingle batch and window order number she’s installed since 2016, which comes in handy when a manufacturer issues a recall. She hikes the Skyline-to-the-Sea trail every spring, usually with a backpack full of trail repair tools she volunteers to carry.
Raj P., Service Coordinator
Raj is the live voice you get when you call (669) 259-1843 at 10 PM because a storm just peeled back a section of flashing. He’s been with Rowan since 2019, and his job is to match the right technician to the right problem, confirm the written scope is complete before anyone drives out, and make sure the photo documentation links hit your inbox within two hours of the crew leaving. He holds a California contractor’s license, which matters because he can read an estimate line-by-line and catch when a competitor’s quote omits the permit cost or the disposal fee. Raj grew up in Santa Clara, went to Wilcox High, and still lives three blocks from his parents, which means he knows which streets flood in January and which neighborhoods built on fill settle differently than the ones on bedrock.
Jordan K., Apprentice – General Carpentry & ADU Framing
Jordan joined us in 2022 through a community college construction program in Cupertino, and they’re working toward their B-General license while rotating through every trade we offer. Right now they’re specializing in ADU framing and the particular challenge of matching new rooflines to existing structures without creating water traps, which is a common issue in Santa Clara’s 1950s subdivisions where original eaves were cut short for cost. Jordan’s already completed OSHA 30 and the EPA RRP lead-safe certification, and they’re the one who asks the questions everyone else stopped asking years ago, which occasionally saves us from an assumption. They play goalkeeper in a rec league in Mountain View and bring the same reflexes to catching dropped tools before they dent a finished floor.
