To identify your Cover system, check the edge restraint for a stamped model code, or measure paver thickness at a lifted corner. Classic measures 45mm, Pro and Permeable both measure 60mm but differ in spacer nibs - Permeable has wider joint gaps. OEM Cover edge restraints are color-coded: gray for Classic, charcoal for Pro, green for Permeable. We also source aftermarket equivalents from Belgard and Techo-Bloc where Cover OEM lead times stretch past a week, and we note the substitution in your written scope. The range depends on three factors: square footage, substrate condition, and access. A 400-square-foot driveway on stable soil with good side access sits at the lower end; the same footprint with a failed subgrade requiring 12 inches of removal and replacement, plus tight gate access for mini-excavator work, pushes toward the upper end. What you can safely check: lift one paver at the failure edge and measure how much bedding sand remains. If it’s within 3/4 inch of specified depth and the base rock is still angular (not rounded from washing), you may need only joint sand replacement and re-compaction. Check the slope with a 4-foot level - water needs to run away from structures.

Where DIY goes wrong: excavating past the bedding layer without understanding the base gradation risks creating a soft spot that telegraphs through in months. Compacting over PVC irrigation lines or shallow conduit - common in Santa Clara’s older Rivermark and Old Quad neighborhoods - cracks what’s buried.
